Aziraphale?
Crowley: Aziraphale?
Everything is so much whiter than it should be. There used to be a desert here, but not

Crowley: Aziraphale?

Liv is not moving. Muriel and Locksley and Saraqael have
We have, too. There’s only Crowley
Crowley: Aziraphale, where are you?

Crowley: Can you hear me?

And there he is.
Crowley: Oh, thank someone.
Crowley throws both arms around Aziraphale so suddenly that Aziraphale drops the Book.
A demon is squeezing an angel to his chest as if he’s afraid if he lets go, they’ll both vanish.
Aziraphale: Oh!
Crowley: You s̟͈̜ͬ̉̇t̖͎̽͆͂͐o̪ͣͥ͌̋̚p͉̫̗̓ͩ̋p̩͚̎̈́͟ͅḛ̡̠̝͈͜d̵̉ͭ̾ͥ̌ writing! I thought I’d n͈̺̣͂͆̉e͚ͬͦͦ̓ͅv̰͎̱ͬͨͅe͓͖̟͔͗͟r̷̠͖̋̄͘ see you again!
His voice breaks around the word
Very
as if he can’t quite believe that Crowley is here, Aziraphale lifts his hand to the demon’s shoulder and holds on tight.
Aziraphale: I’m here.
One of Crowley’s hands is cradling the back of Aziraphale’s head to hug the angel closer to himself. That hands lets go a little for Crowley to press his lips into Aziraphale’s hair and inhale a shuddering breath that sounds like a sob.
Aziraphale: (slowly sinking into the embrace) I’m here, Crowley. I’m here.
Crowley grabs the angel’s upper arms to shove himself away. He let’s go. Aziraphale’s hand sinks down again, just as
it has been lifted.
Crowley: That was reckless! What the Heavens were you thinking!
Aziraphale: I knew it was going to be fine.
Crowley: How?!
Aziraphale: You were going to rescue me.
Crowley scrunches up his face and forcefully stabs his finger at the angel’s chest.
Crowley: No!
No! No! No! No! No! I’m furious!
Aziraphale: Crow-
Crowley: You don’t get to do that! You left! And then you come back and then you left again and nobody even knew if you’re alive!
Aziraphale: I was ñ̰̭̐̓̾e̢͕͙̠̐ͅv̸̖̔̈́͋ͩe̛̪̼͒̂ͭr̯̆͐̆ͮ͢ going to leave you, you silly snake. Not for good!
Crowley: Then what is this?!
He gestures at the stillness around them. At the absolute.
Crowley: This is f̟̮̌ͩ̎͘ō͇͗̓̄͟r̫̯̞͆̑ͅe͓͖̟͔͗͟v̜́̀̾́͠ḛ̡̠̝͈͜r͙̥͆͂̒͘! This is the definition of fͨ̈͊ͪ̍̔o̪ͣͥ͌̋̚r̸̷͇ͬͧ͏e̛̪̼͒̂ͭṿ̼́ͯ̾̈ȩ̳̀͆̉̚r̪̥̜̒͊͋!
Aziraphale: But you are going to get me out of it!
Crowley: What if I hadn’t understood?!
Aziraphale’s eyes turn soppy as they focus on the creature in front of him – as if he had just heard something very, very silly and very, very endearing.
Aziraphale: I entrusted myself to the cleverest being I know, and he had all the t̛͖̫̓ͯ̆i̙̝̝̬ͤ͜m̷ͯ̓ͩ̇̎e͓͖̟͔͗͟ in the world to find me.
It was the wrong thing to say; Crowley’s face darkens.
Crowley: You left me with all the t̖͎̽͆͂͐í̻̥ͪ̾͘m̺͉̖̏ͣ͢e̛̪̼͒̂ͭ in the world to mourn you instead of coming to me and doing this together.
Aziraphale looks pained
Aziraphale: Would you have listened?
Crowley: (shouting) You could have tried!
Aziraphale’s tone hardens, too; though he’s quieter than Crowley, and only holds onto that edge for a few words before his voice goes wobbly:
Aziraphale: I did! I begged you to listen to me! Again, and again, and again, and again! I needed you, Crowley! And you left me to fend for myself again!
Crowley’s jaw is working.
Aziraphale: (cont.) You keep saying I left you, but you were the one who walked out of that bookshop without me. I thought I was dying in that moment! It felt like my heart was giving out! I couldn’t breathe- You left me, when all I wanted – all I begged you to, was to leave together!
Crowley: (calmer, yet full of disdain) You wanted to leave with an angel. That is not me, Aziraphale.
Aziraphale: And what difference does that make? I wanted to leave with you! I needed you, no matter what you are! You don’t need to be a demon to be you!
Crowley: (loud) And that’s where you’re wrong!
Aziraphale: (just as loud; but there are tears in his eyes) I would have Fallen for you. In a s̟͈̜ͬ̉̇e͚ͬͦͦ̓ͅc̨̠̗͇ͧ̍ǒ̤̠̓͐͠n̴̺͇̏͐͛d̢̡̛̜ͨ͟!
Crowley: I have never asked that of you.
Aziraphale: No. (He takes a
fluttering breath.) No, you didn’t. I just thought that being us meant more than standing your ground on a side that isn’t ours.
Crowley’s jaw is still clenching and unclenching as he shakes his head.
Crowley: Don’t turn this around on me. I wanted to go off with you.
Aziraphale: Crowley. You love humans. You love when they’re good, and you love when they’re bad, and you love when they’re clever. You love when they complain about the little things and you’re in awe when they endure the big things for what or whom they believe they have to be strong for. You love coffee and wine and restaurants that are a little too expensive. You love gossip magazines and á̶̫̇͒f̗̅ͭͩͨt̬ͤ͐̊̃ę͇ͬ̌͟ṟ̫̐̃̋n̞͓̜͗͌o̭͍͐͢͞ò̤̯̲ͩn̨̠͗ͣ̏ television. You love cars and ignoring speed limits. You love to be caught speeding and answering your ticket with the most annoying legal jargon that the public servants won’t be able to object to. You love laughing along to Much Ado About Nothing one night and complain about the dialogue in Waiting For Godot the n̠͓͕͂̚ḛ̡̖̽ͬx͙̻̺͂ͪt͔̜̝͚̕. You love snakes and lizards and baby goats and you love pretending like you don’t.
Aziraphale takes a breath that he wouldn’t need if he were truly an angel and only an angel.
Aziraphale: You love Mayfair and Soho. You love London. You love having a home. And you’ve already lost yours once, á̶̫̇͒ ľ̷͠͏̸o̳̞͍̎̌n̡̤̯̖̏g̺̹ͪ̾̚ t̗͆͐ͅ͏i̵̺ͦ̏̅m̨̼̺͖̊ę̼̘́̎ a̗͆͏̢͆g̰̟͛̓̀o̫̙ͬͦ͠, and it took you t̩͖͂̀͠ḭ̶̫̙̓ḿ̮̊̏ͯę͇ͬ̌͟ that humans calculate in tectonic shifts and layers in the Earth’s sediment to find a new one. I will not let you lose it again. You have never asked me to Fall for you. So don’t expect me to not fight tooth and nail to keep you from Falling again. Because it doesn’t matter whether you become an angel or a demon or the devil himself. What matters is what you lost by becoming that. What mattered about it is how it hurt you. So no. I will not go off with you just to watch you Fall a second time in all the ways that matter, except for a title that never defined you to b̛̛̏ͯ͠ḛ̡̖̽ͬĝ̞̍͂́i̴͚͇̐̕n̡̤̯̖̏ with.
When Crowley speaks, his voice sounds raw:
Crowley: So what? We fight f̟̮̌ͩ̎͘ō͇͗̓̄͟r̫̯̞͆̑ͅe͓͖̟͔͗͟v̜́̀̾́͠ḛ̡̠̝͈͜r͙̥͆͂̒͘? Until they win? Angels, demons, God, or Satan – any of them?
Aziraphale: We could at least try instead of giving up. I will. I will fight fͨ̈͊ͪ̍̔o̪ͣͥ͌̋̚r̸̷͇ͬͧ͏e̛̪̼͒̂ͭṿ̼́ͯ̾̈ȩ̳̀͆̉̚r̪̥̜̒͊͋.
Crowley: For what? A few more millennia?
Aziraphale: For us. For our f̣̍ǫ̂ř̔e̡̖v̺͝ę̌r̫̃.
Crowley: Oh, angel. (He sounds tired.) Nothing lasts f̞o̸r̡e͟v̂ḛr͐.
And just like that:
The bandstand. Here.
Muriel: Aziraphale!
Now.
Liv: What- Mr Fell? Where did he come from?!
The book-stand crashes to the ground with a deafening boom. And behind it, an old man slowly picks himself off the ground.
Saraqael: Metatron!
Metatron: You! (He points at Aziraphale, his hand shaking with rage.) You ripped out the page of the Book of Life itself, while we were both there, with it! On that same page!
Aziraphale: (huffy) I had to stop you from looking up where Yeshua went. I had hoped I didn’t have to. I waited – just in case it could be avoided – when I left that message for Maggie. But I knew that one of you, sooner or later, would come for the Book. So when you did, I did what I had to do.
Muriel: But… The book! If the page is gone, then how…?
Crowley: It was never gone. There was no possible point in time where it could have been gone. The moment it was gone, was the moment that it stopped itself.
Metatron: When that demon restarted time, it meant the Book continued writing.
Muriel: Oh. Because it is time.
Saraqael: It tells time. And time tells it.
Crowley jumps forward and tries to grab the Book of Life from the end of the fallen book-stand. Before he reaches it, Aziraphale grabs Crowley’s hand instead.
Aziraphale: I’ve tried that already! We can’t remove the book from the stand and we can’t move the stand without the help of Heaven!
Muriel: But Saraqael said that all Heaven needed in order to find the Son of God, is the Book! And now they have it right here! What else do we do?
Aziraphale: Run!
With Crowley’s hand in his, Aziraphale starts running towards the tall buildings in the distance. Crowley does not need even a second to recalculate; he just trusts Aziraphale and follows. Muriel hesitates a moment longer, and looks first at the Metatron, then at Saraqael, before they come to a decision about themselves and “sides” – and Muriel also starts running after their new family.
Liv: Oh, shit!
Liv seems to realize that she and Locksley are the only members of their group left at the bandstand, and starts running, camera in hand, as fast as she can. In bursts – whenever her right hand comes up for momentum – we can see Crowley: run – stop – tug at Aziraphale’s hand.
Crowley: Angel, wait! (He turns at the hip towards the humans.) Nathan! Locksley! Come on!
Liv: (out of breath) So… you do know… my name…
Locksley overtakes the camera on the left. He passes the demon on the next surfacing of the camera.
Aziraphale: Crowley! You stopped running-
Crowley: (towards Aziraphale) Yes, I know. (to Liv) Come on!
Aziraphale: (cont.) -to save the humans.
Aziraphale smiles at Crowley’s profile. He looks relieved, even though they’re standing still instead of escaping from whatever fate is waiting for them in a park full of angels.
The old man’s voice calls after them:
Metatron: Run as fast as you like! There’s nowhere you can hide the boy anymore! Say goodbye to your wretched world!
As she reaches out for Crowley’s upturned palm, the phone slips from Liv’s hand and hits the ground hard – and the live-stream cuts out.
